3 Ways To Improve First Impressions

Screen Shot 2014-01-17 at 11.08.10 AMAre you pitching an idea, selling a service, looking for a mate, or interviewing for a job? Beware of first your impressions! They tend to last longer than you think. Here are 3 ways to improve your first impressions so you get a second chance.

1. First Impressions are Lasting Impressions:

Research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology has shown that someone ‘s first impressions of you, tend to persist. It takes one-tenth of a second for us to make snap judgement of someone. We are neurologically wired for this, thanks to our “amydala,” a part of the brain that by-passes (amygdala hijack) the neo-cortex. In a matter of seconds, the the input from the amydala is used to decide whether we like something or not

2. Look Fresh

I know you may be thinking, looking fresh is not your business; after all, you are not the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Well, regardless of who you are, looking fresh on the first day, is part of your business. You odd to pay attention to it.

Your grooming can make or break. You don’t have to look like a Bollywood star, but you need to look fresh enough to reflect the position that you are applying for. Does that mean you  should be dressed in a tuxedo, when applying for a job to be fish monger at the mackerel warehouse? You get the point.

3. Be Personable

“Keep your tone conversational,” my speech coach used to tell me in 2005. Other people who watched my presentations also gave comments like, “Be more natural, don’t be too dramatic, or loosen up a bit.”

As recent as two years ago, I was reminded not to be too formal. Yes, am a slow learner, but you don’t have to be like me. In essence, I am suggesting that you keep pleasant and genuine outlook. When you are genuine, they will likely mirror you.
